Asher

Following Egan’s invitation, Asher joined Baris, Egan and Master Walper in the dining hall where they were already in deep discussion about two paths, Volcanic Rush and Mountain’s Way.

With help from Baris the night before, Asher had already weighed his options and decided on the Mountain’s Way path of cultivation.

The conversation soon veered towards areas he needed to improve on.

They’d all agreed that for the tournament his fighting skills were adequate as long as he integrated them with his newly enhanced level one Formation Stage spiritual senses.

The word “adequate” grated on Asher’s ear.

He had to be so much more than that if he was going to survive long enough to make it to the top three.

Talk soon turned to the topic of enlightenment.

Baris was the first to comment on Asher’s mastery of the spear.

“I’ll admit, I’m impressed by how well he fares against enormous beasts and stronger opponents.”

Walper nodded while stroking his long white beard. “I take it you have an innate understanding of the spear because of your consistent practice and experience, but if you wish to advance, you need to think of your progression from the sense of the weapon towards the Heart and Spirit of the weapon.”

Asher knew the basics of enlightenment and weapons training, so he was confused by Walper’s use of the terms Heart and Spirit in the context of the spear.

“I’ve been told I have a Sense of my spear, I can feel it in every move I make but the Heart and the Spirit, I never heard of before. What is the difference between them?”

Egan nodded for Walper to continue with his explanations. “Through practice and experience, you gain knowledge and understanding of your weapon’s weight, reach and how best to use it to your advantage while minimizing any inherent disadvantages compared to other weapons. That’s the solid foundation you must build if you wish to attain the Heart of the Spear. Wouldn’t you agree, Egan?”

Egan nodded. “Yes, at that stage your weapon becomes almost like a second skin. Movement with it and through it becomes second nature to you. You don’t need to think. Almost like the beating of your heart in your chest, it just happens.”

“Hence the name,” Baris added, pouring wine from a gourd in front of him.

Finally, they discussed the Spirit of the weapon.

Walper leaned forward, his dark eyes glittering in the light of the spirit lamps. “To attain the Spirit of a weapon, you must give special attention to your spiritual world. At this stage, if you are successful you can trigger the most challenging breakthroughs like those at Unwoven to Sage and beyond. Your weapon is no longer a tool but part of you. This means you no longer need to possess the weapon physically in order to wield the power of the weapon itself.”

“How should I begin?” Asher asked the archives master.

“It is simple in theory but hard in practice,” Walper replied. “You need to explore your own inner truth about you and your chi cultivation path.
